This has been the BEST month of my life! My sweet baby boy, Oliver, was born 4.5 weeks early on August 16. It was quite the interesting day... I had my first contraction at about 1:00 that afternoon and didn't know for sure what it was. Throughout the rest of the afternoon I had on and off mild contractions, but just kinda dealt w it. We went to our friends home for dinner around 5, and the contractions were getting worse and more frequent! At about 6:30 that evening I told Ty we needed to go back home cause I was hurting quite a bit and didn't know what to do. We got home around 7pm and I decided to call the on call dr to just ask him what he thought I should do... Turns out the answering service accidentally paged the wrong on call dr so he didn't have the pager and I waited an hour without a call back. By that time it was about 8 PM and I was really wanting to cry I was hurting pretty bad! I was having contractions about every 2-4 mins at this point. We decided to throw a bag together in case I wanted to go to the hospital. I called the on call dr again which they finally called me back and he told me to get in there to get checked. I got to the hospital at 8:30 PM and I was dilated to 9 cm.... When they told me that I started crying cause I was so nervous about the baby being so early and also scared that I was about to have a baby!! It was a flood of emotions!! They moved me to the delivery room and had to give me an antibiotic because I hadn't been tested for group B strep yet, so they told me I had to wait to push till that antibiotic was done. When it finished they broke my water and I pushed a total of 4 contractions (about 12 pushes- which was maybe 10 mins) and then my beautiful baby was here at 9:48 PM!! It was magical and amazing and Ty and I have been so smitten by him since the second we saw him!:) he weighed 5 lbs 8 oz at birth, and was perfect as can be!
Little Oliver started having some respiratory difficulties since he was born early, so they took him to the nicu and put him on cpap. He also had a feeding tube put into his mouth, and an IV in his hand. They didn't let him eat so he got his sugar/fluids through the IV. The next day he was doing well so they discontinued his cpap and let him try breastfeeding. He did so well with all of that so they took his feeding tube out too. The following day they stopped the IV fluids and had to do blood sugar checks to be sure he was maintaining his levels by getting enough from breastfeeding. He also had to get blood cultures taken the night he was born because of I hadn't had that group B strep testing. He had to wait 48 hrs for the results and was treated w antibiotics during those days. The cultures came back negative and he was ready to go home! He had to pass a car seat challenge since he was premature, which is where they make him sit in his car seat for 90 mins while hooked up to monitors to be sure his oxygen levels and heart rate remain stable. My amazing little boy passed all the tests with flying colors and he came home w us on Wednesday August 19.
That was such a special day and we love having him home w us!! This has been the best 2 weeks of our life!! I will post more details of him being home in my next post:) as for now, here's some pictures!.. Cutest baby ever!!
